Njala University, Bo Campus, Towama Location, 22nd April 2026– The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Njala University, Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, has officially received a solar power system donated by ActionAid Sierra Leone to enhance sustainable energy use on Bo Campus.
The system which was installed by BBOXX SL Limited includes a 5KVA inverter and a 5kWh battery, aimed at improving electricity supply at the Great Hall of Towama Location while reducing reliance on fuel-powered generators.
Receiving the donation, Vice-Chancellor and Principal described the initiative as a timely and valuable contribution to education, noting that access to stable electricity remains critical to effective teaching and learning.
He, however, emphasised the need for expanded energy solutions across the university to meet increasing demand.
Providing the rationale for the donation, the Regional Manager for South and East at ActionAid Sierra Leone, Desmond Kanneh, said the organisation's partnership with the university, particularly in youth engagement programmes, inspired the support.
"We have been working with young people at the university through our Global Platform, focusing on learning, human rights, and research," Kanneh said. "We recognised the need to shift to green energy, as generators emit carbon that affects both people and the environment."
He added that reliable solar power will enable students to study longer hours, conduct research, and improve their academic performance, while also supporting the use of digital tools.
He expressed confidence that the facility will be well managed and used within its capacity to ensure durability.
He added that improved lighting will enhance campus security and create a safer environment for both students and staff.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Bo Campus, Professor Rashid Ansumana, expressed appreciation to ActionAid for the support and called for continued collaboration to advance development on campus.
