Njala University 28th September, 2024- Professor Rashid Ansumana, the Principal Investigator of the West African One Health (WAOH)-Actions for Understanding, Preventing and Mitigating Outbreaks project and other members of the consortium has participated in a four-day 8th World One Health Congress (WOHC) in Cape Town, South Africa. The delegation also included  Amber E. Martin, Project Coordinator and Monya Konneh, Socio-ecologist.
The four-day Congress which took place on the 20th to 23rd September, 2024, featured a remarkable and progressive agenda that included parallel tracks covering, among other things, the science-policy interface, antimicrobial agents and resistance, and one health science.
This year's event brought together more than 1,400 global One Health stakeholders from 87 countries, with 400 speakers given 70 sessions, and 600 scientific posters were displayed. These stakeholders included scientists, policymakers, representatives of international institutions, civil society, and the private sector.

The sessions made it feasible to discuss the primary One Health challenges and to exchange research findings and recent policy developments.
Professor Ansumana along with three other Principal Investigators from the COHRIE team, took part in a key panel discussion titled "IDRC's Collaborative One Health Research Initiative on Epidemics (COHRIE): How Countries in Africa and Latin America are Responding to Infectious Diseases Using Coordinated One Health Approach."
Mr. Monya Konneh demonstrated the research capabilities of Njala University by showcasing two excellent research abstract posters, "Leveraging AI-Driven Text Network Analysis for Community-Based Pathogen Surveillance: Evaluating the Effectiveness of InfraNodus in Enhancing One Health Outcomes in West Africa (Poster 3152)" and "Equity in One Health Implementations: Examining Gender and Social Group Dynamics through Community Action Networks in Sierra Leone."
These results show the WAOH consortium's innovative technological contributions to emerging and re-emerging zoonotic disease surveillance and the vital significance of an inclusive and gender-responsive approach within Community Action Networks (CANs).
The 8th World One Health Congress 2024 allowed participants to hear from world-renowned experts on global One Health science and policy over the course of four days.
The results of the 8th World One Health Congress will be incorporated into the high-level talks of the 79th UN Session in New York to address all cross-sectoral and transdisciplinary aspects of the One Health paradigm.
The Congress offered an excellent opportunity to examine global One Health science and policy from an African perspective.
