Department of Survey and Geo-informatics
Mapping the world, informing decisions, and building a more spatially connected Sierra Leone.
🔎 About the Department
The Department of Survey and Geo-informatics is dedicated to the science of measuring, mapping, and understanding the physical world. In a country where demand for geospatial professionals far outstrips supply, our graduates play a vital role — providing the spatial data and analytical skills that governments, businesses, and communities need to make informed decisions.
Our programme integrates traditional surveying with modern technologies such as GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and satellite positioning. Students develop a deep understanding of how spatial data is collected, processed, and applied — from cadastral surveying and engineering projects to environmental monitoring and urban development planning.
Our graduates go on to make a real difference — working in government ministries, international organisations, research institutions, and the private sector, both in Sierra Leone and across the globe.
🎯 What We Focus On
Our teaching and research are built around the issues that matter most — combining practical skills with strong academic foundations.
Surveying and Geodesy
Mastering the principles and techniques of land surveying — from topographic and cadastral surveys to geodetic measurements and engineering applications.
Remote Sensing
Using optical, microwave, and hyperspectral satellite data to observe and monitor the earth's surface for environmental and land management purposes.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Building expertise in GIS software, geospatial databases, spatial analysis, and mapping — essential skills for almost every modern profession.
Photogrammetry
Learning to extract spatial measurements and 3D models from photographs and drone imagery — a fast-growing field with wide applications.
Spatial Data Modelling
Analysing, modelling, and visualising geospatial data to solve real-world problems in land management, infrastructure, and environmental monitoring.
Geostatistics and Data Analysis
Applying statistical methods to spatial data to uncover patterns, support decision-making, and communicate findings clearly.
🏫 Our Programmes
We offer undergraduate programmes that are academically rigorous yet deeply practical. Each programme is structured over four years (eight semesters) and prepares you for a wide range of careers.
Surveying and Geo-informatics
A rigorous four-year programme that trains you in the full spectrum of geospatial science — from field surveying and photogrammetry to GIS, remote sensing, and geodetic measurement. You will graduate with the technical skills and professional competencies needed to address the significant shortage of geospatial professionals in Sierra Leone and the wider West African region.

Sierra Leone and West Africa face a significant shortage of trained geospatial professionals. This programme positions graduates to fill roles that are genuinely in demand — and to make a tangible impact.
Students gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools including total stations, GPS devices, drones, GIS software, and remote sensing platforms — not just theoretical knowledge.
The final year includes a dedicated Survey Practice Field Workshop — a unique, intensive experience that consolidates all your practical surveying skills in a real-world environment.
From mineral exploration and infrastructure planning to environmental monitoring and property management, geospatial skills open doors across many sectors.
