Department of Land Management and Administration
Managing land wisely — for the people, the environment, and future generations.
🔎 About the Department
The Department of Land Management and Administration exists because land is at the centre of Sierra Leone's economy, identity, and future. From agricultural development and urban planning to environmental governance and community rights, land touches every aspect of life — and managing it well requires trained, ethical professionals.
Our undergraduate programme combines geography, GIS, land economics, ecology, and land law to give students a well-rounded education in how land resources are surveyed, valued, planned, and governed. Students gain hands-on experience through field surveys, GIS computing sessions, site visits to land agencies, and an industrial attachment — graduating ready to contribute from day one.
Our graduates go on to make a real difference — working in government ministries, international organisations, research institutions, and the private sector, both in Sierra Leone and across the globe.
🎯 What We Focus On
Our teaching and research are built around the issues that matter most — combining practical skills with strong academic foundations.
Cartography and Surveying
Learning to map and measure land accurately — the foundation of all land planning, cadastral mapping, and land administration.
GIS and Remote Sensing
Using geographic information systems and satellite data to manage, analyse, and visualise spatial information about land resources.
Agriculture and Ecosystem Management
Understanding how land supports food production, biodiversity, and ecosystem services — and how to manage these sustainably.
Land Law and Administration
Studying land tenure systems, land legislation, and the administrative processes that govern how land is owned, transferred, and regulated.
Land Use Planning
Developing skills in land evaluation, spatial planning, and land-use decision-making for rural and urban settings.
Land Economics
Examining the economic dimensions of land — including land value, resource economics, and the financial aspects of land management.
🏫 Our Programmes
We offer undergraduate programmes that are academically rigorous yet deeply practical. Each programme is structured over four years (eight semesters) and prepares you for a wide range of careers.

Sierra Leone urgently needs trained land professionals to support sustainable land governance, resolve land disputes, and guide agricultural and urban development. This programme prepares you to meet that need.
You will not just study land management in a classroom — you will go into the field for surveys, use GIS software hands-on, visit land agencies, and complete a full industrial attachment.
Graduates of this programme are sought after in government land agencies, environmental organisations, NGOs, surveying firms, and international development bodies.
Our programme takes a whole-systems view — linking land management to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and community wellbeing.
