Background
The Human Kinetics and Health Education Department (KINHED) formerly the Physical Health Education Department (PHED) was one of the founding departments of the University. The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in order to serve the country, the university, the community and the society. The department has two important components:
- The Academic Wing for the Degree & Certificate Programmes
- The Games & Sports Wing for technical evaluation of students during practical sessions, the organisation & supervision of Games & Sport Meets and other physical activities for the university community.
The Academic Wing in the Department is operating under three Units i.e.
The Human Kinetics and Kinesiology Unit which offers these degree Programmes:
- B.Ed – Human Kinetics & Kinesiology
- BSc (Edu.) – Human Kinetics & Kinesiology for Undergraduate Programmes
Eligibility for the four-year programme:
Applicants must have Senior Secondary School (SSS) Level Certificates in English Language and any four of the following: Health Science/Education, Physical Education, Biology, Agriculture, Core Science, Home Sciences, General Arts, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry. The minimum grades required will always be a credit at WASSCE/GCE O’Level in each subject not more than two sittings. There is also provision for matured candidates.
- MSc (Edu.) – Exercise Physiology
- MA (Edu.) – Sports Administration & Management for Postgraduate Programmes
- MPhil (Edu) – Exercise Physiology
- MPhil (Edu.) – Sports Administration & Management for Higher Degree Programmes
- PhD (Edu.) – Exercise Physiology
- PhD (Edu.) – Sports Administration & Management
Eligibility for the postgraduate & higher degree programmes:
In line with University Standards, Entry Requirements are as follows:
- Five Credits or better in West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or O’Levels in not more than two (2) sittings
- Division II (Div. 2) or better in Bachelor’s Degree. There is also provision for Division III (Div. 3) in Bachelor’s Degree with working experience in the relevant discipline.
- Research abstract in the topic of interest in consultation with departmental supervisor
- Master’s Degree with 3.6 FGPA or better, with a “B” Grade or better in Thesis Writing for MPhil and 4.2 FGPA or better, with an “A” Grade in Thesis Writing for PhD
The Health Education & Behavioural Science Unit – offers these degree programmes:
- BSc (Edu.) – Health Education & Nutrition for Undergraduate Programmes
- Awaiting Approval from APRCC for BSc (Hons.) Health Economics
- Awaiting Approval from APRCC for BSc (Hons.) Psychology
Eligibility for the four-year programmes:

Awaiting Approval from APRCC for Master of Health Education (MHEd) for Postgraduate Programmes &
Awaiting Approval from APRCC for Higher Degree (MPhil & PhD) Programmes in Health Education with options – Health Economics, Health Nutrition and Health Administration & Management respectively.
Eligibility for the postgraduate & higher degree programmes:

The Higher Teachers and Certificate Unit – offers Certificate Programmes like:
- Higher Teachers Certificate (Secondary) in Physical Health Education
- Higher Teachers Certificate (Primary) Physical Health Education and
- Teachers Certificate (TC) General, certified in conformity with University Examination and the NCTVA Examination criteria.
Eligibility for the certificate programmes:
Applicants must have a Senior Secondary School (SSS) Certificate/GCE O’Level Certificate in any Four (HTC-Secondary), Three (HTC-Primary) or Two (TC) of the following subjects: Health Science, Physical Education, Biology, Agriculture, Core Science, Home Sciences, General Arts and Mathematics. The minimum grades required will always be a credit at WASSCE/GCE O’Level in each subject not more than two sittings. There is also provision for matured candidates.
The department is making all efforts for the provision of equipment and facilities for this specialized discipline which should be made available not only for the students but also for the wellness of the Njala community.
