Institute of Languages and Cultural Studies (INSLACS)

ONCE WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF LAW AND OF ETHICS YOU ARE FREE TO DO YOUR WILL AT THE INSTITIUTE OF LANGUAGES AND CULTURAL STUDIES (INSLACS) – WELCOME

The Institute of Languages and Cultural Studies (INSLACS) - located in the School of Education - was established in the 2004/05 academic year in place of the former Department of Language Education.  The overall mandate of Institute is to teach, carry out research and undertake outreach tasks as can be provided for by the disciplines therein.   More specifically, we enable students to maximize their competencies in each of the disciplines in view of the international bench-mark.

 INSLACS comprises two units: (i) the Languages Unit, which teaches the disciplines of, English, Linguistics, French and Indigenous Languages (ii) the Cultural Studies Unit which teaches the disciplines of Literature, Performing Arts as well as Creative/Practical Arts and Development Communication.

In process is an upgrading of the curricula of two media-based disciplines in the Cultural Studies Unit: the Performing Arts will be upgraded to Theatre and Performing Arts; Development Communication will be elevated to include the Bachelor of Arts degree.   The upgrading is to address emerging issues of national and global concern:

  • the growing tendency of youth to criminality, possibly relating to drug abuse and recurrent political violence
  • the threat of international terrorist groups which strive to capture youth populations into their ranks;
  • the general moral disengagement observable in society, by which people tend to hold social vices such as corruption, violence and general dishonest, as acceptable patterns of behaviour.
  • Enabling youth to use their natural talents in a guided way to reach economic self-reliance.
