Alhaji B. Gogra (PhD) joined the Chemistry Department, School of Environmental Sciences, Njala University, as a Lecturer II effective 1st August 2006. In September 2007, he then proceeded on study leave to the People’s Republic (PR) of China to pursue a PhD Programme in Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the prestigious China University of Geosciences (CUG), Wuhan, Hubei Province and returned home to report for duty at Njala University in August 2010. Upon his return for duty, he conducted lectures, researches/outreaches and training in various courses in Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Health and Sanitation, Disease Surveillance, Disaster Risk Reduction, Occupational Safety and Health, Entrepreneurship Education and Environmental Management and Quality Control (EMQC) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has also supervised several postgraduate and undergraduate students’ research projects in these fields of studies. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer position on April 1, 2014, and appointed as Acting Dean of the School of Environmental Sciences on October 1, 2015.

He is highly interested in environmental and health-related researches especially environmental engineering (water quality analyses, soil quality analyses, pollution, bioremediation, public health, etc) and is result oriented. He has published at least seventeen (17) wide-ranging research articles in various international journals; with many more articles in-press and in preparation.

Whilst studying in PR China, he also took part in the following projects as an investigator or a co-investigator: National Outstanding Youth Research Foundation of China (40925010), International Joint Key Project from National Natural Science Foundation of China (40920134003), National Natural Science Foundation of China (40873060, 40673065), International Joint Key Project from Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, and the 111 Project (B08030). He is also computer-literate in standard software applications. In May 2010, he was appointed an Associate Editor, Continental Journal of Environmental Sciences (Online Journal) and many others. Since university days he was a founding member in the following non-profit making environmental movements/groups/organizations: International Students Organizing Committee on Climate Change, China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, PR China; Environmental Sciences Students’ Association (ESSA); Njala University College (University of Sierra Leone); Environmental Foundation of Sierra Leone (ENFOSAL), Freetown, Sierra Leone; etc.

Before joining the department as a lecturer he has already gained extensive experiences serving in different capacities before and after his bachelor’s degree in 2000. Between March 2003 and August 2006, he served as Inspector of Factories (Occupational Safety and Health), Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Industrial Relations; between September 2001 and March 2003, teacher (Mathematics and Sciences), United Methodist Secondary School for Girls, Freetown and between September 2000 and August 2001, teacher (Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics), Harford School for Girls, Freetown, etc. In all these places of employment, he brought about significant changes in both the physical set-up and quality performance.
